there's no need to wait until the next march madness to start filling out your brackets. rachael ray is looking for 64 charities to compete in a $200, 000 contest to find the most deserving no-kill animal organization in the united states.

her outreach organization, rachael's rescue, raised $400, 000 last year, but was overwhelmed by the number of letters she received daily from small shelters and animal welfare organizations asking for help. her solution: mutt madness.

starting in october, the 64 charities (chosen by rachael ray and her panel, including such names as kathy griffin and dr. peter harris kross) will compete in the bracket-style tournament college basketball has made so famous. the public will vote for their favorite charity and after six rounds of cash rewards, the mutt madness grand prize winner will receive $50, 000.

entries are currently being accepted for the first round of mutt madness on the competition's web site (www.rachaelray.com/muttmadness) until september 30. so if you are involved with a shelter group or rescue organization, submit your entry today. no nonprofit organization is too big or too small to be in the running.
